“Keeping Tai Chi Active in New Zealand”

Our inaugural AGM was held on 6th August in Wellington.  Attendance was good and it was a very enjoyable day, further enhanced by Master    Trainers Chris Hattle and Toi Walker, who provided two workshops on the Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method and the Sun 73 Form respectively.

Elections were held for the Committee and the positions of Chair (Hazel Thompson), Vice Chair (Chris Hattle), Secretary (Tamara Bennett) and Committee Member (Toi Walker) remain unchanged.  We farewelled Treasurer Geoff O’Neill who resigned due to other commitments, and he was replaced by Ferne McKenzie from Wellington.   During the AGM we also elected our first Life Member, Ann Rose of ACC.


Following requests from members, we now have an exclusive lapel badge featuring our specially designed logo.  Our badges are available to all, membership not necessary, and you can find out more about the badges at this link:


TRAIN as an Instructor in Tai Chi for Arthritis

INVESTMENT $290 pp incl GST (Course workbook and morning/afternoon teas included)

The course is designed to train qualified people to teach the program, including exercise instructors, physiotherapists (physical therapists), healthcare professionals, Tai Chi instructors, advanced Tai Chi students, and other professionals with similar qualifications.

~ Participants attending with the goal to become an authorized instructor /leader of this program are required to learn the TCA movements using the instructional DVD “Tai Chi for Arthritis. 12 lessons with Dr Paul Lam” prior to attending the workshop. This DVD can be obtained from Hazel Thompson The cost of resources is discounted when registration is confirmed by payment. Hazel will also discuss a recommended text “Teaching Tai Chi Effectively”

This class has limited places.

~ Priority is given to instructor applicants. Non-instructor participants may also attend

~ Instructor certification is valid for 2 years.

~ A current first aid certificate is a prerequisite

Tai Chi for Health Community NZ (TCHC NZ) was developed last year, in hopes to unite and offer NZ TCHI instructors support and to further the spread of Tai Chi for Health programmes within the NZ communities. Our aim is to encourage all NZ TCHI instructors to join as members. Members are eligible for discounts to workshops and merchandise, invitation to the AGM/Workshops, plus the opportunity to apply for scholarships to the Sydney One-Week, Dr Lam’s NZ workshops and our AGM Workshops.
