Newsletter 38

Number 38

March 2011

Hello everyone

On behalf of my fellow Cantabrians, many heartfelt thanks for the messages of support and offers of accommodation and aid which have poured in since last Tuesday’s devastating earthquake.  Looking at our ruined city, and bearing in mind the terrible losses which many families have suffered, it is hard to believe life will ever get back to normal.  However if good will alone was enough our city would be fully restored by now, we can’t thank you enough for your love and care.

After the September quake I included an emergency checklist in the newsletter, and if you have not prepared your own kit I urge you to please do so without delay.  Even after our terrible experience last year, many families here were still not prepared, and ended up without water for their children.  A 20 litre plastic container costs less than a movie ticket, drink and popcorn, please go and buy a couple!

All the information you need on preparing for a disaster can be found at this site:

Under the Articles link you will find a piece written by Chris Hattle and me on the subject of dealing with stressed students or family.  This piece contains a link to the excellent Ministry of Health site which has many articles covering stress and disaster situations.  Dr Lam has also included this article on his website.
